Finite Element Analysis
Design Goal
Create a lightweight TMJ implant with >10-year fatigue life and natural frequencies >50 Hz to prevent resonance.
Skills
(Structural Simulation) Ansys
I simulated a Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) implant under realistic jaw-loading conditions using Ansys. Titanium Ti-6Al-4V and Stainless Steel 316L were compared based on stress, fatigue life, and natural frequency.
I refined the mesh globally and locally to ensure convergence and accuracy, achieving over 80% elements with ideal aspect ratio and quality. I ran both static and modal analyses and used the Gerber correction to assess fatigue under 1 million load cycles.
Based on the results, I redesigned the implant to reduce mass and improve performance. Final models showed >10-year lifespan and all natural frequencies above 50 Hz. Ti-6Al-4V was recommended due to its superior strength-to-weight ratio.
